Boxers banned from UABF elections by AIBA

Lausanne: WORLD Amateur Boxing Governing Body (AIBA) has passed a resolution and has banned all the professional boxers from contesting in the forthcoming local body UABF elections.

Godfrey Nyakana, one of those vying for the UABF presidency, is a retired professional boxer and had accused the committee of being inconsiderate to the professionals.

AIBA on March 2 clarified it the committee headed by UOC boss Rogers Ddungu that apart from AIBA’s version of professional boxing- the World Series, it will not entertain any other professionals in their activities.

AIBA further advised phrasing of article 16:2(h) of the proposed UABF constitution that is likely to address the issue.

The articles says, “An active or retired professional boxer and /or active or retired official of the professional ranks (other than the World Series or AIBA professional boxing) shall not be eligible for election as president or executive member or for appointment to any other position within UABF.”

The world body also emphasized on the point that unless advised or permitted by AIBA, this article cannot be amended in any way.
