Jaipur: Ridng on a half century (63 off 47 balls) scored by Dwayne Smith followed by some useful contributions from Rohit Sharma (20 off 17 balls) and Keiron Pollard (31* off 20 balls), Mumbai Indians beat Highveld Lions by seven wickets and nine balls remaining to keep their hopes alive in the Champions League T20 tournament here on Friday.
Earlier, Mumbai Indians' bowlers bowled well to restrict Lions to 140/5. Lions were in for a trouble as they lost five wickets for just 82 in 13.2 overs. However, a 59-run partnership between skipper Alviro Petersen and Dwaine Pretorius for the sixth wicket gave the South African team some respectability. The Lions captain finished on an unbeaten 35 (27b, 3x4, 1x6), while Pretorius made a 21-ball 31 not out (1x4, 2x6).
Chasing the target, Mumbai lost the wicket of Sachin Tendulkar (5) in the third over. Thereafter, Smith and Dinesh Karthik added 31 runs for the second wicket before Karthik fell to Imran Tahir, hitting him straight to Petersen at backward point. Smith, however, continued kept his coll and added 43 runs with captain Rohit Sharma (20)for the third wicket in just five overs.
Smith was at his aggressive best as found boundaries with ease to notch up his fifty in just 33 balls. Rohit provided him able support from the other end before being caught by substitute fielder Bavuma off Dwaine Pretorious. He struck two fours during his 17-ball knock.
Later, Pollard played a fantastic cameo of 31 runs off 20 balls and along with Smith steered Mumbai to seven wicket win.
