Paris: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was no match for David Ferrer who defeated him in straight sets (6-1, 7-6(3), 6-2) at Roland Garros on Friday.
The Spaniard did everything right in this semi-final tie, starting from his opening game where he was 0-30 down initially but made a terrific comeback to win it.
Tsonga made an impressive comeback in the second set as he raced to win the first three games to make it 3-0. But he was ousted by Ferrer who kept his patience to spoil his party by snatching his half-chances that built some pressure on his opponent.
The final set was more of a highlight of the first set. Tsonga saved two break points at 1-2 but Ferrer managed to take the last five points of the match and won in straight sets.
Ferrrer was quoted saying, “It’s a dream for me to be in a final of a Grand Slam and Roland Garros is the one that is most important for me. It is great as we are both Spanish players in the finals, so it’s important for the country. At the end of the day it’s sport – there are things that are more important than that – but it’s important for me and my family. And for Rafa.”
