Saina Nehwaal cruises into 2nd round of India Open

saina in india open 2nd roundNew Delhi: Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal delivered a dominating performance to cruise into the second round of the Yonex Sunrise India Open 2013 here today at the DDA Badminton Stadium, Siri Fort.

The world No. 2 took 33 minutes to dispatch her unseeded Indonesian opponent Belaetrix Manupati 21-12, 21-15 in the opening round matchup of the women’s singles competition. The Hyderabadi who started the tournament top seeded got off to a brilliant start and maintained her domination throughout the course of the match to make it 2-0 aggregate against the Indonesian.

In another match India’s P V Sindhu seeded eight in the $200,000 tournament also qualified for the next round after she beat Yao Xue of China. World No. 16 Sindhu who lost her opening game showed great resiliency to win 17-21 21-18 21-14.

In men’s singles, the biggest upset of the day was scored by India’s K. Srikanth who beat fourth seeded Danish player Jan O Jorgensen. Srikanth who lost to him in the Swiss Open 2013 last month exacted his revenge and won the match 21-7, 18-21, 21-12.

Meanwhile it was curtains for fifth seeded P Kashyap of India who failed to break his jinx against Taufik Hidayat of Indonesian. The world No. 7 went down 13-21, 23-21, 21-18 to the former Olympic Champion to make it 0-6 on aggregate.

World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia got his campaign off to a good start and beat Scott Evans of Ireland 21-16, 21-5 to qualify for the next round of the men’s singles.
