New Delhi: World No.1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia and women’s No. 6 Ratchanok Intanon of Malaysia emerged as the winners of the Yonex Sunrise India Open 2013 in men’s and women’s competition respectively here today at the DDA Badminton Stadium.
Winner of the inaugural edition in 2011, Chong Wei now has won the Indian leg of the OSIM BWF World Super Series twice, while Intanon clinched her maiden Super Series title.
The top seeded Malaysian playing Japan’s Kenichi Tago ranked ninth in the world stretched his unbeaten streak to 12 matches with a 21-15, 18-21, 21-17 victory. Both the players started off well and were involved in a tight battle initially but Chong Wei took control of the match and raced to win the first game.
Pushed to the wall, the Japanese forced a comeback and sealed the game. With the match level tied, it looked like anybody’s match and it was a neck to neck battle. But eventually it was the Malaysian star who ran away with the title in front of a packed house.
In the women’s single competition Intanon who has been making a steady progress finally won the elusive Super Series title by beating the defending champion Juliane Schenk, world No.4 22-20, 21-14 in 45 minutes.
