Senior Hockey Nationals: Haryana emerge Champion

hockey-200Lucknow: Haryana registered 4-1 victory over Railways to win the final of the 3rd Hockey India Senior Women National Championship played at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium in the Guru Gobind Singh Sports College, Lucknow on Tuesday.

Railways scored their opening goal through Amandeep Kaur in the 15th minute. After conceding an early goal, Haryana forwards played attacking game and built pressure on their opponents. Haryana scored through Udita (34th & 65th min) and Narinder (47th & 49th min).

Railways wasted their scoring chances as they failed to convert 10 penalty corners.

In the earlier match, Jharkhand defeated Punjab 2-1 to finish third in the championship.


Jharkhand who led 1-0 at the half time scored through Ebha Kerketta in the 30th minute by converting penalty corner. In the 37th minute Basanti Kachhap scored another goal for Jharkhand to make 2-0 lead on the opponents. Punjab tried to reduce the margin in the 46th minute with the penalty corner converted by Sukhjit Kaur. After their first goal Punjab wasted a few scoring chances and failed to score any further goal.


Jharkhand showed appreciable fluency and purpose, applied pressure on Punjab, but the forwards were a let-down as they failed to cash in on the opening inside the striking circle.

Chief Guest Mr. Ram Karan Arya, Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs, Uttar Pradesh presented winner’s trophy to Haryana team.

On this occasion Principal secretary, Sports and welfare, Chandra Prakash presented runners- up trophy to the Railways.
Hockey India selectors Col. Balbir Singh and Syed Ali were also present on this occasion.
