Hobart: Pulling off a stunning win against Sri Lanka and that too with a bonus point, India have kept their chances of reaching the final of Commonwealth Bank Series alive. But achieving a target of 321 inside 40 overs was something that even surprised Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
“To be honest, we won the toss and decide to field with a hope of restricting them at 25-270. But 320 was too big a total to chase in 40 overs. But then it is one of the best one day wins that I have had as a captain. Virat Kohli was on fire. But then this could not have been possible without the flying start that we got from Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag. Gautam Gambhir played good and later Sursh Raina did the rest of the damage with Virat. These kinds of innings make me proud of my team,” said Dhoni, adding that now they will wait and watch the outcome of their match against Australia and Sri Lanka.
“We did what we could do from our end. Now we have a few days off which we will use for practicing and shopping,” said Dhoni.
Meanwhile Virat Kohli was ecstatic about his innings today and termed it to be one of his best one day innings so far. “This is probably one of my best one day innings. It was an important match and I am happy to have come out good today. Now we will root for Australia and hope that they beat Sri Lanka,” said Kohli.
Mahela Jayawardene meanwhile said that there wasn’t much they could have done today. “After scoring 320, losing in such a manner is unexplainable. But then what can you do when they bat like that. Virat Kohli was on fire and the contribution from other Indian batters was also good. They rotated the strike well. What we needed was wickets and we failed to do that,” said the Sri Lankan captain.
