TT: Diptayan maintains joint lead

Brazil: Diptayan Ghosh maintained his joint lead in the Open section of Under-14 category after settling for half point against Bluebaum Matthias of Germany in the sixth round of the ongoing World Youth Chess Championship here at Caldas Novas on Wednesday. While Bommini Mounika Akshaya, who had the joint lead after fifth round matches in the Girls’ Under-8 category suffered her first defeat in the championship against top seed Tran Vuong Mai Khanh of Vietnam and now at joint second spot with five points.


Meanwhile, nine players including national junior champion Aravindh Chithambaram and Karthikeyan Murali are tied at the top of the point table in Under-12 Open category with five points. Chithambaram got better off team mate Abhimanyu Puranik while Karthikeyan held Hungarian Fide Master Gledura Benjamin in the sixth round encounters.

After a setback in the last round, Nandhidhaa PV came back strongly to beat Guimaraes Artemis Pamela of Brazil in the sixth round and now tied for the second spot in Girls’ Under-16 category. In girls’ Under-14 category, the match between Monnisha and Srija Seshadri ended without decisive result and both players are now at second spot in the point table with five points.

Three more rounds remaining in this nine round Swiss system championship which concludes on Saturday.
