Ahmedabad: USHA International, one of India’s leading consumer durables company, is the first company to promote Ultimate Frisbee in India. Taking forward this strong commitment, USHA announced the ‘USHA Ahmedabad Ultimate Open 2017’ in association with UPAI (Ultimate Players Association of India).
Team Jumbish from Surat emerged victorious and lifted the Usha Ahmedabad Ultimate Open 2017 Trophy by beating Team Jet Lag Squad from North Carolina, USA in the Gold pool finals. Team Flywildfrom Chennai finished thirdin the Gold pool. Team Gnash from Goa won the Silver pool finals as well as the Spirit of the Game award.
USHA Ahmedabad Ultimate Open was a three day tournament slated between January 6 & 8, 2017 and the final took place at Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University. A total of 28 teams from 9cities, including one International team from North Carolina, USA, participated in the tournament.
Speaking about the event, Komal Mehra, Events Head, Usha International said, “AUO 2017 was the first tournament of the UPAI tour which marked the beginning of a new and more professional tour system in Indian Ultimate. As part of the company’s aim of nurturing sports talent,Usha has been continuously striving to spread and promote active lifestyle.
The company has been very supportive by preparing kids with adequate coaching for upcoming championships and reinforce the message of care and well-being of everyone. Usha has ensured this by setting up ‘Coaching Clinic in Ahmedabad’ where six players from New York were fully dedicated to provide training to local teams and other players to help them prepare for AUO 2017.”
Ultimate has been gaining huge popularity in India and last year more than 1700 players from 116 teams participated in Ultimate tournaments across 5 cities – Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Surat. India sent 4 teams to compete at the World’s Ultimate and Guts Championship (WUGC) 2016 in different categories – Men’s Open, Women’s Open, Mixed and Masters.
