Hewitt loses to Tomic in a tense battle in US Open second round

New York: Lleyton Hewitt has been knocked out of the US Open, losing 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 5-7, 7-5 to compatriot Bernard Tomic in a battle that lasted 3 hours and 27 minutes here on Thursday.

Tomic fired 25 aces and saved two match points in his first ever meeting against Hewitt, who was contesting his final US Open. Tomic will now play against 12th seed Richard Gasquet in the third round. Gasquest beat Dutchman Robin Haase 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-4 in the second round. 

Meanwhile, sixth seed Tomas Berdych beat Jurgen Melzer 7-6(2), 6-1, 6-3 to set a third round clash with 31st seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who battled past Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-1.
