Six Indian Coaches Go for Basketball Without Borders Program in South Africa

Mumbai: NBA India’s grassroots programme Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA programme selected six Indian coaches, one each from Ludhiana, Mumbai, Kochi, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai for the 13th edition of Basketball without Borders (BWB) programme in South Africa.

Here, the coaches will get the opportunity to learn and enhance their basketball training skills with the best coaches/trainers from around the world. Their selection was made on the basis of number of students they engaged, the number of basketball led classes they conducted and their overall involvement with the program.

Mal Singh from Guru Harkishan Das Public School in Ludhiana, Jeevan Raj from CMS Public School, Kochi, Kerala, Varun Ahlawat from Delhi Public School, Vasundhara, Anahita Gupta from Modern School for Girls, Kolkata, Digambar Mali from Fr. Agnels School, Vashi, Mumbai and Udhayakumar from Lady Andal Venkatasubbarao High School, Chennai are in Johannesburg at the American International School for this unique developmental effort.

The NBA and FIBA’s global basketball development and community outreach program started on July 29 and will end on August 1 at the American International School of Johannesburg in South Africa. NBA Africa Game 2015 will take place at Ellis Park Arena in Johannesburg.

We feel the global exposure provided by NBA is great for the local development of basketball and would be great if you would be interested in featuring the same in your publication.

Please find below details on the BWB program and quote by Carlos, Sr. director of Basketball Operations, India for your kind reference:

Basketball without Borders (BWB) is the NBA and FIBA’s global basketball development and community outreach program that unites young basketball players to promote the sport and encourage positive social change in the areas of education, health, and wellness.

Since 2001, BWB has reached more than 2,300 campers from more than 125 countries and territories, with 37 campers drafted into the NBA. Twenty-two former BWB campers were on NBA rosters during the 2014-15 regular season, including 2015 NBA All-Star and BWB Africa 2015 coach Marc Gasol.

Carlos Barroca, Sr. Director, NBA India said, “The teachers did a great job in India and are here at BWB Africa to continue to learn and enhance their basketball training skills with the best coaches/trainers from around the world. They will also view the NBA Africa Game – which will be a once in a lifetime experience for them.”
