Eden Gardens has been a really memorable ground for me, says Rohit Sharma

Kolkata: Rohit Sharma made a dream debut in Tests as he went on to make 177 which helped India win the first Test against West Indies by an innings and 51 runs at Eden Gardens on Friday.

Rohit Sharma, who was Man of the Match, said that the wait to make his debut in Tests was worth it. "All I can say is that it was worth it. It can't get better than this. It was such a memorable match. I am really happy with what we have achieved,” said Rohit.

He added that he and Ashwin knew that they had to extend the partnership as much as they could to get a lead. “It wasn't easy to bat as runs weren't coming easy. We just wanted to stick out there and capitalise on loose balls,” said, adding that he really loved playing at Eden Gardens.

“The crowd was amazing. It's been a really memorable ground for me."

Meanwhile R Ashwin said, "When I got to the crease, the wicket was behaving and Shillingford was bowling. I thought, I'd spend time at the crease and trust my defence. Shillingford was giving it an extra rip and that was a bit of a challenge,” said Ashwin, adding that he enjoyed batting with Rohit.

“It was a pleasure watching Rohit bat,” he said, adding that it was one of the best bowling spells he had. “I was very happy to just focus on lines."

Meanwhile, happy with India's stupendous performance, Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said that it was the disciplined bowling that helped India's cause.

"I think this was a fantastic performance. The second day was the worst to bat and it became a better wicket as the match progressed. It was the disciplined bowling that helped up,” said Dhoni, who was in all praise for debutant Mohammed Shami.

“Shami was fantastic. He got the right length and that was the reason he got nine wickets. You need a bit of pace if you want to dominate. He has very good seam positioning, which means he can reverse away from the right-handers too. On a wicket that has more bounce, he can move the ball both ways,” said Dhoni, who seemed to be quite impressed with another debutant Rohit Sharma.

“It is good to see how Rohit has batted. He is very talented but it is good to see it on the field," said the skipper.
