Kapil defends Mahendra Singh Dhoni's captaincy

New Delhi: Legendary Indian all rounder Kapil Dev has raised concern over the poor form of openers Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag and said that it can pose problems for India in the upcoming test series against England and Australia at home.

"It is a cause of worry if players like them do not get runs. They have immense reputation and when you have such big reputations then there is a case for you to defend that," said Kapil on the sidelines of the Junior National tennis Championships.

"They are big players and it is important for them to score runs not only for the team but also for themselves," he added.

Indian Team’s performance since the last year has not been satisfactorily and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been on the line of fire for India’s poor run, but then Kapil defended Dhoni saying that he has done all he could do.

"You cannot expect him to win all the time. He won the World Cup, World T20, won Test matches, been number one in ICC rankings, so you can`t expect him to win everytime," said the 1983 World Cup winning captain.

Talking about three skippers for three different formats, he said, “"If you have someone who is good enough to lead in all three formats, why do you need separate captains. But is there anyone who can do it? Do we have options for three formats?"

When asked Sachin Tendulkar’s retirement from the game he refuted to make an statement and said, “It is better if we do not talk about big players.”
