Chennai: On the inaugural day of the 4th Hockey India Junior Men National Championship 2014 (Division A) the opening match was the clash of Tamil Nadu taking on Delhi.
The match started with Delhi showcasing great strength in the very 1st minute when Sonu Kumar scored through a field goal giving the team the lead and edge over the opponents. During the rest of the session both the teams maintained its attack on each other but going into the break Delhi was still leading the game 1 goal to 0.
In the second half the scenario was no different with both the teams failing to score. But just 4 minutes left to the game Tamil Nadu came back into the match when in the 66th minute Judson D scored through a field goal giving his team the equalizer. It immediately put Delhi in the back foot and Tamil Nadu in its momentum scored its 2nd and winning goal in the 69th minute, giving them the win on its very first match of the tournament.
In the 2nd match between Uttar Pradesh and Haryana resulted in a draw with both the teams showcasing a great game of hockey. There was not much to choose between both the teams as they maintained attack on each other in the entire game. While Uttar Pradesh scored 3 goals in the very first half in the 25th, 26th and 35th minute, Haryana on the other hand managed just 2 goals in the first half and which was scored in the 32nd and 34th minute. For Uttar Pradesh their 1st goal came through a penalty strike and which was taken by Arjun Yadav. The rest 2 were field goals and came from the stick of Manish Rajbhar and AP Singh. While the 2 scorers for 1.
Going into the break Uttar Pradesh was leading with 3 goals. Tamil Nadu was under the pressure in the second half but they did not let this pressure to take over and continued playing their normal game. While Uttar Pradesh was looking at increasing the goal margin, Tamil Nadu played for the equalizer. Finally in the 55th minute Manpreet scored the much required goal and helped the team equalize the game. From there onwards both teams tried to go ahead and win but were unable to convert the opportunities with finally the game ended in a draw.
In the last match of the day Jharkhand took on Madhya Pradesh. Both the teams gave a tough fight to each other scoring 2 goals each and the match resulting in a draw. While the first session did not yield any goal from both the teams, in the second half Madhya Pradesh immediately scored in the 36th minute when the team scored though the penalty corner opportunity that the team got. Jharkhand immediately came back in the game in the 38th minute Nitesh Rao successfully managed to take advantage of the penalty corner that the team got. Jharkhand scored another goal in the 46th minute which came from the stick of Buddu Tuti. The last goal of the match and the equalizer which resulted in a draw came in 50th minute when Mohd Nizamuddin scored a field goal.
