Blow for India as Shikhar Dhawan ruled out of remainder of Test series against Lanka

India suffered a huge blow after their in-form opener Shikhar Dhawan was on Monday ruled out of the remainder of the Test series against Sri Lanka due to a hairline fracture in his hand, says a report in The Tribune.

India, who lost the first Test by 63 runs, will be playing the second Test from Thursday. “The BCCI medical team has confirmed that Dhawan has been ruled out of the remaining part of India’s tour of Sri Lanka. Dhawan had injured his right hand during the first Test at Galle. He underwent further tests that confirmed a hairline fracture in his hand. He would require four to six weeks to recover from the injury,” a BCCI media release said.

Dhawan, who scored a century in the first innings, batted with a swollen knuckle after he dropped a catch standing at the first slip.

“In fact, the injury was the reason that Dhawan could not play his natural game on the fourth morning as he was stuck on his overnight score for 36 balls, not being able to pack a punch in his drives. India have some serious injury issues to deal with at the moment as the other regular opener, Murali Vijay, is also recuperating from a hamstring injury,” says the report.

Meanwhile, a report in The New Indian Express says that if Virat Kohli or the team strategists had any dilemma regarding leaving out one of Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay or KL Rahul, Vijay’s hamstring niggle, which he sustained in Zimbabwe and didn’t  heal in time for the Galle Test, solved the puzzle by default.

“Rahul and Dhawan duly opened, and the former’s listlessness in both innings guaranteed that Vijay, if fit, could replace Rahul. But going into the second Test, Rahul is the only assurance. Dhawan’s hairline fracture would take a minimum of four-six weeks, while Vijay will come back only if he is fully fit, which will be assessed only on the eve of the Test,” says the report.

“Since it’s a hamstring injury, we don’t want to take any risk and he will play only if he is 100 per cent fit,” said team director Ravi Shastri, who though specified that “he is recovering very fast.”
