AB de Villiers breaks Ganguly’s record to become fastest player to reach 9,000 ODI runs

AB de Villiers ODIAB De Villiers is now the fastest ODI player to have scored 9,000 runs in One-day Internationals. He surpassed former Indian captain Saurav Ganguly who took 228 innings to reach this personal milestone. AB De Villers took only 205 innings to reach this feat.

Currently AB De Villiers is playing in New Zealand. This was the 3rd ODI where he surpassed the former India captain’s record to score 9,000 runs.

De Villiers needed 87 runs when he began this New Zealand tour. In the 1st ODI at Hamilton he scored unbeaten 37 runs and guided his team to victory. In the 2nd ODI he scored 45 runs at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, while the third ODI at Wellington, he pulled off a shot for a boundary and registered his name into the record books for being the fastest to score 9,000 ODI runs.

AB De Villiers is one of the 18 batsmen in the 9000 ODI runs club. De Villers also has an incredible strike rate of 99.94

But can De Villers record stand for long with his teammate Hasim Amla and current Indian skipper Virat Kohli not far behind?

Although Hashim Amla is the fastest batsmen to score 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000 and 6000 ODI runs and Virat Kohli is the fastest captain to score 1000 runs in ODIs .

Virat Kohli needs 245 runs to score in next 10 innings to break the record of 8,000 runs in 182 innings. This record is also in the name of AB De Villers. Kohli has scored 7755 in 171 ODI innings till now and averages 53.31.
