The comeback man: Favourite knocks and moments in Yuvraj Singh’s career

Yuvraj Singh backIndia vs England ODI and T20 series will see a comeback of veteran south-paw Yuvraj Singh. Yuvi will make his comeback into the ODI team after four years as he played his last One Day International against South Africa at Centurion on December 11, 2013. Yuvraj has been also selected for the T20 series. His last T20 International was against Australia in World T20 2016 at Mohali. 

We all remember Yuvi’s role in India’s World Cup Win in 2011. He was also named man-of-the-tournament. He is a fighter and he showed us when he defeated ‘Cancer’ and worked hard to play for India again.

Yuvraj has played  293 One Day Internationals and scored 8329 runs at an average of 36.29 with 13 centuries and 51 half centuries. His best score is 139 that came against the Aussies at Sydney. He is an equally good bowler. He has proven this many times. In 293 matches he has taken 111 wickets at an average of 38.18 and economy rate 5.09. Yuvi has two four-wicket haul and one five-wicket haul in whole ODI career. 

Ahead of India Vs England ODI and T20 series, we bring to you the favourite knocks and moments in Yuvraj Singh’s career:

·139 Vs Australia at Sydney: This is the highest score by Yuvraj in ODI. On 22nd of January 2004, Yuvraj scored a sensational hundred against the Aussies in Australia. India was in very deep trouble when he joined VVS Laxman. India had lost their main batsmen including Sourav Ganguly, Parthiv Patel and Rahul Dravid for only 80 runs on the scoreboard. India felt the absence of Sachin Tendulkar in that match. Yuvraj and Laxman rebuilt the Indian innings with partnership. This partnership changed the game into India’s favour. Their partnership of 213 runs for the fourth wicket helped India post a competitive total of 296 for 4 in 50 overs. Both Yuvraj and Laxman slammed tons. Yuvi was finally out on 139, just 3 balls before the 50th over and Laxman was not out on 106 runs. But fortune didn’t favour India as they lost this match by 2 wickets because of D/L method.

·84 runs against Australia: Yuvraj Singh was a major find in Under-19 World Cup in the year 2000. This match against Australia was in the Champions Trophy on 7th October 2000. India defeated Kenya in their first game by 8 wickets. The second game was against Australia. India was sent in to bat first by Australia. After the decent start of 66 runs, India lost the momentum when Tendulkar was dismissed by Brett Lee on 38. Later, Gauguly also joined Tendulkar. Rahul Dravid also couldn’t do much. Vinod Kambli and Vijay Dahiya too followed. It was Yuvraj Singh’s knock of 84 from 80 balls that gave India some momentum. He tried to build partnerships with Kambli and Dahiya. But they didn’t last longer. His partnership with Robin Singh was the second highest one in that Indian innings. He shared 64 runs with Robin Singh and helped India to recover a bit.  India kept losing wickets at regular intervals with Yuvi still at the other end. During this innings Yuvraj scored his first half century in this match. He was finally caught and bowled by Shane Lee for well made 84. His innings powered India to 265 in 50 overs. In second innings Indian bowlers did a good job by restricting the Australian batsmen for 245 runs in 46.4 overs. India won the match by 20 runs in the end. Yuvraj Singh was got his first man-of-the-match award for innings of 84 runs.

·69 Vs England at Natwest Series Final: This match was played on July 13th 2002. The Lords cricket ground was truly entertained by both the teams. England batted first in that final. Hundreds from Marcos Trescothick and Naseer Hussain led score to 325 for 5 in their 50 overs. Chasing 326 for victory, the Indian opener gave a good start of 106 runs. But wickets of Ganguly and Sehwag in consecutive overs, gave a chance to England to make a comeback into the match. England seized this opportunity and removed Dinesh Mongia, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar in quick succession. From 106 for no loss, suddenly India were in a spot of bother.  At 145 for 6, two young men and future cricketers of India, Yuvraj Singh and Mohd Kaif tried to play a rescue act together. These two guys turned the match around on its head. England couldn’t break their partnership as they added 121 runs for the sixth wicket ensured that India were in the game. After Yuvraj got out for well made 69, Kumble couldn’t hang around with Kaif. He was out very quickly in span of two balls. It was Kaif again who involved with a small partnership with Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan to give India a famous win at Lords. India won the Natwest series.

·102 not out Vs Bangladesh: This was Yuvraj Singh’s first ODI hundred against Bangladesh in Dhaka in the year 2003. This was the first match of TVS Cup. India batted first in that game and scored 296 in 50 overs. India got to huge score because of maiden ODI hundred of Yuvraj Singh. His innings of 102 not out powered India to such score. His partnership with Ajit Agarkar turned the game around for India.  This partnership of 92 runs for the seventh wicket was the highest in that Indian innings. Yuvraj and Agarkar both took India out of trouble when they reeling at 172 for 6. This massive stand was broken when Ajit Agarkar was dismissed by Khaled Mahmud. After Yuvraj took the onus on him and made sure that he got India to respectable position. In that process, he also completed his wonderful century. This performance from Yuvi charged the bowlers to and they bundle out the minnows Bangladesh for just 76 in 27.3 overs.

·138 not out Vs England at Rajkot: England toured India in 2008 for test and ODI series. This was the game of that series on 14th November 2008. India were sent in to bat by the visiting team England. That decision proved very costly for the visitors. India got to an awesome start. Indian openers Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag gave the start that the hosts wanted. The opening start of 127 runs in just 19.5 overs hurt England. They managed to get a breakthrough in form of Gambhir. He was out to Samit Patel for 51. Few overs later Sehwag also joined Gambhir in the pavilion. Samit Patel again picked up the wicket of Sehwag for 85 runs. Both the openers got the start but they didn’t convert them. Suresh Raina also played well for his 43 but got out very early. He built a partnership of 89 runs with Yuvi. Then captain Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh took the charge, their partnership of 105 gave India a huge momentum in that game. This 109-run stand was finally broken by Dhoni’s wicket. But no could stop Yuvi on that day. He smashed the England bowlers out of the park and in this process he completed his well deserved century. His unbeaten partnership with Rohit Sharma gave India the finishing touch to their innings. Yuvraj scored 138 not out with Rohit who supported him well. He also a not out on 11. India’s target of 388 was massive one for England to chase. They could only manage 229 in 37.4 overs. India won the match by huge margin of 158 runs. Yuvraj was the man-of-the-match for his knock 138 runs.

·118 Vs England at Indore: This was the second game of the series. Yuvraj scored hundreds in consecutive matches. This innings helped India to get out of trouble. England wanted to stay alive in this series. Their bowlers did a decent job in the match. They put India under pressure by picking up quick wickets. India were in deep trouble when Yuvi came in to bat. His knock of 118 runs saved the team. Due to his innings, India progressed to 292 in 50 overs. He was equally well supported by Yusuf Pathan. Yuvi showed his all round skills by dismissing four of England batsmen. In his 10 overs, he gave only 28 runs and picked up four crucial wickets. His all round show gave India a big win by 54 runs.

·Man of the tournament in 50 over World Cup 2011: Yuvraj Singh all round talent gave India the World Cup after 28 years. Yuvi became the batsman to score more then 300 and a first bowler to pick more than five wickets in a single world cup tournament. He was the only player to receive four man-of-the-match awards.  He scored four fifties and one hundred in that World Cup. He picked two wickets each Pakistan in the second semi final and Sri Lanka in the final.
