Cook, Root, Anderson, Broad, Ali: Englishmen to watch out for in India Vs England Test series

Alastair CookThe Test series between India and England is about to start and many experts predict it to be a one-sided affair going by the form of the English Cricket Team in the whites. England drew with Bangladesh in their last Test series in which they were expected to win. England are now currently placed fourth in the ICC Test Team rankings just three points behind the Aussies, while India are on the top spot. However, the series won't be a cakewalk for India as the Englishmen who are wounded, particularly after the defeat against Bangladesh in their last Test match will look to give a tough fight to the Indians.

Here is the list of Englishmen to watch out for in the five-match Test series.

1. Alastair Cook

England’s most capped Test cricketer and captain Alastair Cook is definitely a player to watch out for. The left-hander averages more than the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar in Asian conditions, which proves his fantastic ability as a player. A fabulous player of spin bowling, Cook is expected to play the role of an anchor in the England’s batting order. Cook recently registered 10,000 runs in Tests, making him the only Englishman ever to achieve this feat. Cook has tasted success against India as he led England to a 2-1 series win in India in 2012 and 3-1 home series win in 2014. His Bangladesh’s tour was a one to forget for him as he scored just 89 runs. However, his chances of scoring big against India during the series cannot be ruled out.

2.Joe Root

The totem of the English batting line-up, Joe Root will be India’s biggest threat on the tour. His ability to outclass the best of the bowlers with grace separates him from the rest.
However, the middle order batsman didn’t have a great time with the bat against Bangladesh. He managed just 98 runs in the entire series. He averaged 24.50 with the highest of 56 runs.
During the 2014 Test series against India at home, Joe Root smashed 518 runs, which included two hundreds.
His biggest strength is his ability to play long innings without giving up and he will definitely be tested by the likes of Ravi Ashwin come this Wednesday (09/11/16). The battle between Ashwin and Root is the talk around social medias and will be interesting to see how he goes.

3. Moeen Ali

Ali has been the best spinner for England in the last two years and has been prolific in all the departments of his game. Since making his Test debut against Sri Lanka at Lord’s in 2014, Ali has been a regular for England in the whites. The all-rounder has contributed both with the bat and ball at crunch situations giving England a push in the lower-middle order. The conditions in India are more suitable for the spin bowlers and Moeen will play a crucial role in the five-match Test series. He has taken 88 wickets so far in the 32 Tests he has played for England with a bowling average of 39.64.
The off spin bowler had a good run with the ball in Bangladesh as well, notching up 11 wickets at an average of 22.90. He was the only Englishman to pick up a five-wicket haul in the series.

4. Stuart Broad

In the absence of bowling spearhead James Anderson, 30-year old Stuart Broad couldn't do much against Bangladesh and managed to pick up only two wickets from one game he played. Broad will leave no stone unturned to put up a good show on the flat sub-continent decks. Broad will be entering the field with whites for the 100th time for England and is a magnificent feat. He has taken 360 scalps including 15 fifers for England in the longer format.

5. James Anderson

With English Cricket board confirming the inclusion of James Anderson in the Test squad, Indians are sure to have some tough times ahead facing the champion bowler. He has a tremendous record against India in the longest version of the game. He has taken 57 wickets in 14 matches, including two five-wicket hauls and his best performance is 5 for 42 at the Lord's Test.
