Mohali: Varun Khanna returned with an astonishing figure of 8/97 to guide Punjab to a superb innings victory over Railways in their opening Group B Ranji Trophy match at IS Bindra PCA Stadium, here on Sunday. The win also gave Punjab bonus point.
Made to follow on, Railways' second innings folded for 282 runs in 68 overs with Varun scalping as many as eight wickets of the visitors. It is third occasion in the Ranji history of Punjab that any bowler took eight wickets in an innings. Earlier Umesh Kua took 8/37 by against Delhi at Delhi in 1974-75, while by Deepak Chopra had taken 8/38 against Services at Palam Ground in Delhi in 1986-87.
Railways ended Day Three at 125 for five last evening and need 283 runs more to save the innings defeat. However, they failed to make Punjab bat again.
Arindam Ghosh was the only Railways batsman to show some resistance as he remained unbeaten at 98.
