Youth Chess: Bright start for Indian players

Brazil: A strong 45-member Indian team started the championship campaign in style, as 42 players secured full point from first round outing in the World Youth Chess Championships-2011, which got off to a rousing start here at Caldas Novas, Brazil on Friday evening.

 

A total number of 1120 players from 80 countries are participating in fourteen different categories of this prestigious event.

Top seeds in Under-12 categories Aravidndh Chithambaram and Ivana Furtado sailed smoothly to the second round with comforatble victoroies over Porta Campos Nicolas of Argentina and Nunes Agatha Hruba of Brazil respectively. 

In a surprise result in Under-16 Open category Maharashtra youngster Sarang Ponkshe shocked higher rated Russin Fide Master Terentjev Vladislavi in the first round battle. But in a minor setback, medal prospect in Under-14 category Girish Koushik satisfied with half point against his lower rated Polish rival Ulanovski Karol.
