London Chess Classic: Anand opens with a draw

Anand lose to Carlsen in ninth round of Chess MastersLondon: World ChampionViswanathan Anand of India survived a scare before playing out a draw against Luke McShane of England in the second round of the London Chess Classic on Sunday.


Anand who got a first round bye was playing white but could not capitalise on the advantage and had a lucky escape.


Meanwhile World number Magnus Carslen of Norway registered a superb victory over Levon Aronian of Armenia to open his account.


The win now Magnus to 2856 points and he is well on course to become the highest rated player in the history of the game if he can maintain his good run on January 1.


In another game, former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik of Russia handed a defeat to Hikaru Nakamura of United States.


Judit Polgar of Hungary and Gawain Jones of England played out a draw against each other.


Carlsen and Kramnik lead the points table with six points at the nine-player round-robin tournament.


Anand along with Polgar, Jones and McShane are on tied fifth position, while Aronian is down at the bottom of the table.
