Ashbeer, Honey move into second round

Kolkata: Matches went according to form as most of the seeded players moved into the round of 16 in the Goodricke Eastern Indian Matchplay golf championships on Wednesday.


Kapurthala golfer Ashbeer Saini, winner of the strokeplay section, overcame a tough opponent Sidharth Semwal 2&1 and moved into second round, where another seasoned player awaits him in Simarjeet Singh. Simarjeet beat Lokesh 4&3 at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club.

In the other half, Delhi lad Honey Baisoya, a promising youngster, beat Lakhan 2-up and will clash with Imran Ali Mollah who beat Simran 5&4 in an one-sided match.

Bangalore’s Seenappa Chikkrangappa defeated SK Samir 5&4 and will meet Rakesh Kumar, whose win over Karan Taunk was the only upset of sorts in the first round. Rakesh won 1-up.

Delhi’s Gagan Verma moved past Rohan 2-up and his next match is against the talented Bangalore player Trishul Chinappa who beat Ramun 2&1 in a tight match.

Among other well-known players, Khalin Joshi of Bangalore beat Surya PR 2&1 and his next match is against Jasjeet Singh, who beat Gurudev 1-up.

The top-32 players from stroke play qualified for the Match-play, which followed the stroke play competition. The Matchplay ends on Christmas Day.
