London Olympics: Devendro punches his way into quarters

devendro singhNew Delhi: Young Indian pugilist Laishram Devendro Singh outpunched Serdamba Purevdorj of Mongolia 16-11 to make it to the quarterfinals of the men's light flyweight (49kg) category of the London Olympics at the Excel Centre here on Saturday.

Riding high on confidence after his convincing first round win, Devendro got off to a flying and started landing flurry of punches on the Beijing Games Silver medalist Serdamba. Both the boxers played with low guard and were attacking on the counter and Indian made good of the opportunities to win the first round 4-3.

Devendro came out in the second round on a more attacking note and was in no mood to relent and his left right combination was too much for the Mongolian to handle as he was knocked off his feet twice. Even though Serdamba did land few more punches than the first round he still lost the round 4-2.

Such was the Indian’s domination in the match that in the third and the final round, the fourth seeded Serbamba also received a standing count in the match before going down 8-6 in the round.
