Mahesh Bhupathi opts out of Indian Davis Cup team

Mahesh BhupathiNew Delhi: Indian Davis Cup team will not see Mahesh Bhupathi in their tie against Uzbekistan. Bhupathi opted out from the team to allow Rohan Bopanna pair with Leander Paes, announced All India Tennis Association (AITA).

Bhupathi himself backed out as he thought that Paes and Bopanna are best suited for the place, announced AITA. The team had to choose only two players from the trio as SP Misra, captain Davis Cup wanted two singles players in his bank.

The team has chosen Yuki Bhambri and Sanam Singh over the much experienced Somdev Devvarman who has an injury. Vishnu Vardhan is the reserve player for the tour.

AITA said that it was Bhupathi’s decision to not play as he thinks that Leander Paes is in a great form of late and the advantage that Bopanna carries with himself is that he can also play in singles.

Bhupathi and Bopanna recently won the Dubai Open title. India is set to take on Uzbekistan in April in the Asia/Oceania Group I zone tie next month.
