US Open: Djokovic will take on Monfils, Wawrinka to face Nishikori in semis

Stan Wawrnika 2New York: Novak Djokovic will take on Gael Monfils while Stan Wawrinka will face Kei Nishikori for a place in the men's final of the 2016 US Open at Flushing Meadows.

Stan Wawrinka got the better of 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the US Open semi-finals for the third time, here on Thursday.

The fifth-seeded Swiss, who hit 53 winners including 10 aces, will now face sixth seed and 2014 finalist Kei Nishikori, who upset Andy Murray, the second seed and 2012 titlist, earlier in the day.

"It's going to be interesting for sure," said Wawrinka, adding, "We have played many times against each other. He beat me a few years ago here in five sets. He beat me in Toronto and I beat him in Australia. I saw him play today. He was playing really well. We will see also how I'm going to feel physically in two days to get ready for that. I'm ready for a match against Kei."

Meanwhile, Kei Nishikori defeated Andy Murray in the quarter-finals to reach his second career Grand Slam semi-final in New York and his first since the 2014 US Open. In a contest that featured 17 breaks of serve, Nishikori held his nerves to win the crucial points. He won the three-hour and 57-minute contest 1-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.

“There were many up and downs, but I tried to stay calm. I think that's the most important thing I did today. Even though there were many up and downs I tried to stay tough,” Nishikori said, according to www.atpworldtour.com.

Earlier, No. 10 seed Gael Monfils defeated 22-year-old Lucas Pouille in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 to advance to his first U.S. Open semifinal. He will now meet World No. 1 and top seed Novak Djokovic. Djokovic, who is the defending champion, needed had to put in very little work as No 9 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga retired because of a hurt left knee after the first point of their quarterfinal's third set on Tuesday night. Djokovic had won the first two sets 6-3, 6-2.
