Sania Mirza-Monica Niculescu to meet Bondarenko- Chuang in Connecticut Open final

sania mirzaCONNECTICUT: Indian-Romanian pair of Sania Mirza and Monica Niculescu will meet Kateryna Bondarenko and Chia-Jung Chuang in the final of women’s doubles at the 2016 Connecticut Open presented by United Technologies, here on Saturday.

In the semifinals against Andreja Klepac and Katarina Srebotnik, Mirza and Niculescu were on a back-foot after losing the their first set of the tournament, 2-6. The duo stormed back in the second set to win it 6-3. However, it was a tough third set for the Indian-Romanian pair as they were stretched to the tiebreaker, before finally winning it 10-8 to book a finals berth.

Earlier, they had defeated Darija Jurak of Croatia and Anastasia Rodionova of Australia in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 in the quarter-final of the $ 761,000 Connecticut Open.

Meanwhile, Bondarenko and Chuang won the first set against top-seeded Timea Babos and Yaroslava Shvedova before dropping the second. Bondarenko and Chuang came back strong to win third set in the tiebreaker 10-7 to advance to the final.

Earlier, they began their 2016 Connecticut Open campaign with an impressive 6-0, 6-1 triumph over fourth-seeded duo Anabel Medina Garrigues and Arantxa Parra Santonja. In the quarterfinal against wildcards Su-Wei Hsieh and Andrea Petkovic, they won the first set 7-5 before losing the second 1-6. They went on to win the third 11-9 for a berth in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, in the women's singles, top-seed Agnieszka Radwanska knocked off three-time Connecticut Open Champion Petra Kvitova to advance to her first final at New Haven. Joining Radwanska is No. 20 Elena Svitolina, who defeated Johanna Larson 6-4, 6-2 en route to a finals berth.
