US Open semis: Vinci shocks Serena, Pennetta stuns Halep

serena 700New York: Nobody gave her a chance against Serena Williams but Roberta Vinci defied all the odds at the US Open on Friday afternoon, snapping the World No.1 33-match Grand Slam winning streak and to reach her first major final.

After having lost the first set 6-2 in 31 minutes, No. 42 ranked Vinci came back strong to win the second set, 6-4, and, after falling behind 2-0 in the third set, she went on to win the decider 6-4.

Now Vinci will meet Flavia Pennetta in the final who too pulled off a big surprise of the US Open, stunning the World No.2, Simona Halep, to reach the first Grand Slam final of her career.

The No.26-seeded Italian won five games in a row to take the first set then went on another five-game streak from 3-1 down in the second set to close out the No.2-seeded Romanian in two, 6-1, 6-3.
