New York: Indian tennis stars made their presence felt in the first round of US Open as Leander Paes, Sania Mirza and Divij Sharan advance to the second round of the doubles event in their respective categories here on Thursday. However, Mahesh Bhupathi, who paired up with German Philipp Petzschner, lost to the duo of Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil 3-6, 6-7(4) on Thursday.
Sania continued her winning streak at New Havens with her new partner, Zheng Jie as they ousted Germans Annika Beck and Puerto Rican Monica Puig in straight sets. They won the match quite comprehensively by 6-2, 6-2. The 10th seed Indo-China pair will now take on the Hungarian-American duo of Katalin Marosi and Megan Moulton-Levy.
Meanwhile, another Indian legend, Leander Paes too started his campaign on a winning note. Though he won the match in straight sets along with Czech Radek Stepanek by 6-4, 7-6(4), the Finnish-Russian combo Jarkko Nieminen and Dmitry Tursunov gave them quite a tough time. Paes-Stepanek will now be facing a German-Austro duo Daniel Brands and Philipp Oswald.
In yet another match of men’s doubles, Sharan alongwith Yen Hsun won their first round duel against the Dutch pair of Robin Haase and Igor Sijsling by 6-1, 7-5. They will now meet the Israeli pair of Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram in the second round.
