US Open: Makarova stuns Radwanska

US Open: Makarova stuns RadwanskaNew York: Ekaterina Makarova pulled of the biggest upset of the 2013 US Open tournament on Louis Armstrong Stadium, as she stunned No.3 seed Agnieszka Radwanska at Flushing Meadows here on Sunday.

Things were looking good for Radwanska as she took a 4-0 lead in the first set before Makarova pulled up her socks and came alive. She won eight games in a row to build a 6-4 2-0 lead. Radwanska won three games in a row to get things back on serve but Makarova went on her own three game run and, after Radwanska held to make it 6-4 5-4, the No.24-seeded Makarova served it out at love, 6-4 6-4.

Makarova had 28 winners to 22 unforced errors, Radwanska 18 winners to 27 unforced errors.

Next up for Makarova will be No.5 seed Li Na. Li has beaten Makarova in all three of their previous meetings - two of them have gone to three sets, but in those meetings Li won 6-2 in the third set.

Meanwhile World No. 1 Serena Williams beat Sloane Stephens in straight sets on Arthur Ashe Stadium to reach the US Open quarterfinals.

Williams drew first blood, breaking for 4-2, but the No.15-seeded Stephens broke right back, and things stayed on serve for a few more games after that. But Stephens was in trouble again serving at 4-5, fending off Williams' first two set points but firing a forehand down the line just wide on her third set point. The first set went to a fired up Williams, 6-4.

The two held serve in the first three games of the second set but that's when Williams pounced again, breaking for 3-1 and never really looking back, eventually closing her countrywoman out, 6-4 6-1.
