U-16 tennis: Aryan Goveas defeats Raswant RaviPune: Aryan Goveas of Maharashtra knocked out Tamil Nadu’s third seed Raswant Ravi in the boy’s singles and registered the first upset of the Walchand Cup U-16 National Series junior tennis tournament being organised and hosted by Deccan Gymkhana on Monday.


On the inaugural day of this event, Mumbai-based Goveas stayed strong in the decider after losing the second set in the tie-breaker. Goveas won 6-4, 6-7 (7-2), 6-2 and progressed into the second round of the boy’s singles second round.


Lucky losers Mohit Bhardwaj (Delhi) and Karan Lalchadani (Maharashtra) had a great day, both making the most of their luck by winning their first round matches.


Lalchadani eased past Delhi’s Parth Agarwal 6-2, 6-4. Bhardwaj had a relatively tougher outing against Yashesh Mulchandani of Madhya Pradesh, winning 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (8-6).


In a match that went the distance, city lad Jayesh Pungaliya, seeded sixth, survived a huge scare from State-mate Manav Pondkule. Pungaliya won the first set 6-2, before losing the second 3-6. Jayesh just got it right towards the end, wining the final set tie-breaker 8-6.


Uttarakhand’s Utkarsh Bhardwaj and Tamil Nadu’s Vasudev Vijayraman also had to come through three-set battles. Bhardwaj got past P.C.Anirudh of Andhra 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, while Vijayraman got the better of Uttarakhand’s Mayukh Rawat 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.


Meanwhile, none of the qualifiers made it though the opening round of the main draw. Maharashtra’s Yash Agarwal, Aditya Chaloo along with Vatsal Gandhi (Rajasthan), Param Pun (Chandigarh),Yavin Soloman (Orissa) and Anshuman Gulia (Delhi) were straight set losers.


The tournament was inaugurated at the hands of Mr. S.S. Gangawati, President Walchandnagar Industries Limited and Mr. Jayant Nandurkar, President, Walchandnagar Industries Limited. Tournament Director Mr. Nitin Joshi welcomed the guests, while Tennis Secretary of the club, Mr. Mukund Joshi, gave the vote of thanks.
