Monu wins bronze to give India its 3rd medal on final day of Cadet World Championship

Wrestler Monu after winning medal with his coachesNew Delhi: Wrestler Monu won a bronze medal in the 46 kg freestyle category which helped India to finish their campaign with three medals including one gold (Anil 50 kg freestyle) and one silver (Ankush 38 kg, women freestyle) in the Cadet World Wrestling Championship concluded at Sports Hall “Amel Beckovic” in Sarajevo, Bosnia. India finished fifth in the men’s freestyle competitions by securing 37 points.

Bronze medalist Monu said “After winning all the games till quarter-finals, I was confident of going for gold this time but losing a semifinal with a margin of two points was really disappointing for me. But I didn’t give up and made a strong comeback winning one-sided bronze medal match. I would like to thank my coaches for boosting my morale after losing semi-finals and helping me in winning the medal”.

In the run-up to bronze medal, Monu defeated Asgar Mammadliyev (Azerbaijan) by 4-2 and Rustambek Juraev (Uzbekistan) by 2-1. However, in the semi-final, Monu lost to Pilidis Georgios (Greece) 4-2 but in the bronze medal match he easily defeated Dzmitry Yarmplchyk (BLR) 11-0.

In the 100 kg, Nasir Hussain o was in line for bronze medal. However, in the bronze medal round Yakup Yerlikaya of Turkey defeated Nasir Hussain by technical fall, 12-2, shattering the aspirations of the Indian grappler of a chance to win bronze medal.

Earlier, in quarter-final, Khasanboy Rakhimov of Uzbekistan had beaten Nasir Hussain (by fall, 10-5. In Repechage Nasir Hussain won by technical fall, 10-0, against Aleksandar Pantelic of Serbia and in prequarter (1/8) Nasir Hussain had floored (4-0) Tibor Medgyes Hungary.
