Indian women wrestling team finish second in Vth Senior International Wrestling Tournament

Indian Women Wrestling Team celebrating their victoryNew Delhi: The Indian women wrestling team finished second in the Vth Senior International Wrestling Tournament "Cup of the President of Republic of Kazakhstan" held at Astana, Kazakhstan.

The eight member women team displayed a spirited performance while playing against top nations and received a prize money of 10,000 $ with a trophy and medals. The hosts Kazakhstan won the top spot while Mangolia settled for third position in the tournament.

Indian Women Wrestlers made a good start in the event, Commonwealth Games 2014 Gold Medalist Vinesh (48 Kg), Commonwealth Games 2014 Silver Medalist Lalita Sehrawat (55 Kg) and Anita (63 Kg) won their all bouts while Commonwealth Games Silver Medalist Sakshi Malik (58 Kg) lost only one bout in the tournament. Other wrestlers Nirmala Devi (53 Kg), Sarita (60 Kg), Navjot Kaur (69 Kg) and Nikki (75 Kg) also performed well.

Mr. Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, President Wrestling Federation of India said “I am proud of the team and congratulate them on their performance in the “Cup of the President of Republic of Kazakhstan. All the hard work and best efforts our players & support staff have put in prior to the tournament has helped them to finish on the second spot. We still have more than a month for the World Championship and I am sure the Kazakhstan tour will help our women wrestlers to further improve their performance”.

The World Championship to be held in Las Vegas, USA from 7 -12 September will be first qualification event for Rio Olympic Games 2016.

The team will arrive at New Delhi on 28 July 2014 morning.
