STAG Inter-District and Delhi State Table Tennis Championships: North West wear men’s team crown

New Delhi: North West proved yet again their prowesstt to capture the men’s team trophy when they beat squarely the North District 3-1 in the ongoing STAG Inter-District and Delhi State Table Tennis Championships 2016, being played at the Thyagaraj Stadium here this morning.

In the three other team finals, the Sub-Junior Boys and Sub-Junior Girls crowns went the way of North West and New Delhi, respectively. The boys from North West defeated New Delhi 3-1 while New Delhi girls downed West by a similar margin. North, however, had a title in their bag when their Junior Boys blanked out West 3-0 in the final.

Spearheaded by Sameer Sahani and Himanshu Jindal, the men’s team of North West had no problems in the singles but lost the doubles to North when Payas Jain combined with Shubham Goel as they went on to win 11-8, 11-3. But that was all they could do as Sameer had accounted for Shubham 17-15, 11-9 and Himanshu, after a bit of hiccup, downed Peeyush Prasad 13-11, 9-11, 11-5. In reverse singles Sameer outplayed Peeyush to win 13-11, 11-8 for the title.

It was a clean domination by North led by Payas Jain and Subh who won not only the first two singles but also the doubles as they paired up to complete the rout—all wins came in straight sets—against their opponents Manik and Angad.

It was North West’s threesome, comprising Shreyaans, Raghava and Mannit that accounted for New Delhi in Sub-Junior Boys. Shreyaans won against Dhruv 9-11, 11-3, 11-6 in the opening singles, but Raghav lost his 10-12, 7-11 to Yashansh Malik before Shreyaans and Mannit did the trick against Yashansh and Pranav in the doubles with a 11-7, 6-11, 11-6 triumph. But soon, Yashansh beat Shreyaans 11-6, 8-11, 11 to complete the task.

Vanshika show

Yet again, it was Vanshika Bhargava and Anubha Bajaj who did New Delhi proud with their responsibility and understanding as they defeated West’s Tisha and Lakshita 3-1 to take home the title. Anubha did not start well as she went down to Tisha 9-11, 13-11, 5-11 before Vanshika took on the mantle to repair the damage. In What was a Vanshika show, she beat Lakshita Narang 11-5, 11-7 and then, joined by Anubha, played with a lot of understand to outwit West’s duo of Tisha and Lakshita 11-8, 5-11, 11-7 to put their team 2-1 up. Then Anubha, making amends, won her reverse singles against Lakshita 5-11, 12-10, 11-4, much to the relief of New Delhi bench.

Two other finals, Women’s team and Youth Girls, will be played tomorrow as requested by players who are common in the two sections apart from competing in singles events which began today.
