Chennai: Holder Central Railway started on a winning note, defeating Western Railway 25-14, 25-18, 18-25, 25-19 in the women's section of the Panimalar P. John Memorial all-India volleyball tournament, here on Wednesday.

In another women's match, Southern Railway put it across KSEB (Thiruvananthapuram) 25-23, 25-21, 23-25, 18-25, 16-14.

Earlier, the tournament was inaugurated by M. Vijaykumar, Member-Secretary, SDAT. W.I. Davaram, President, Organising Committee, presided. Also present on the occasion was C. Sakthikumar, Director, Panimalar Engineering College.

On the occasion, L. Jennifer, a member of the Dr. Sivanthi Club was felicitated and presented with a cash award of Rs. 10,000 by Vijaykumar.

Jennifer had represented the country in the Asian Senior Championship in Taipei recently.
