Chandigarh Sports Council celebrate National Sports Day

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Sports Council in conjunction with Department of Sports & Education, Chandigarh Administration celebrated National Sports Day to commemorate Birth Anniversary of Hockey Legend Late Major Dhyan Chand on 29.08.2012 at Hockey Stadium, Sector – 42, Chandigarh.


K.K Sharma, IAS, the Adviser to the Administrator, U.T., Chandigarh presided over the function and gave away Cash Awards to 5 International players i.e Sh. Kapil & Anil Kumar Archers, Sh. Oscar Bansal Badminton player &  Poonam &  Mukesh Kumar Para Olympic International Table Tennis Players alongwith  Vikas Shastri, Archery Coach.   Manjot Singh product of Tennis Caching Centre was felicitated for his position in the AITA Tournament and 1st position in the National School Games. Cash Award of Rs. 5,36,000/- was distributed among 5 International sportspersons and 1 Coach alongwith Tennis player The Education Department honor 225 players and 25 Teachers in 24 disciplines for their achievements in the Nationals School Games during the year 2011-12.


Olympian Manjeet Singh represented India in the London Olympic Games 2012 in the event of light weight double scull alongwith  Prashant Chopra who was member of Junior World Cup 2012 were also honored being trainee of Chandigarh Rowing and Cricket Coaching Centre on the eve.  Ex-player of Chandigarh Hockey Academy

Manmeet Raj Singh &  Kawaldeep Singh, Hockey players who were nurtured in the Chandigarh Hockey Academy were honored on this occasion for their achievements.

V.K Singh, Secretary Education and Sports,  Sunil Bhatia, Director Sports,  Upkar Singh, Director Public Instructions (s), Dr. J.P.S Sidhu, Joint Director Sports and prominent personalities, Councilors, Council’s members were present.


K.K Sharma, IAS appreciated and lauded the efforts of City players to bring laurels at International & National level and convey to the parents / custodians to send their wards for sports participation to have a healthy and strong nation.   V.K Singh, IAS Secretary Education & Sports hoped that with the infrastructure facilities available in the city will scale new height in sports.
