Paes, Bhupathi & Olympics: Stop fighting like cats & dogs & play for the nation one last time in London

Indian tennis is going through its worst time. Some of the statements that the leading tennis players from India have made have been very disappointing and almost unbelievable. AITA picked the trusted pair of Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes for the doubles category and that started the unbelievable string of comments and opinions from every person associated with Indian tennis.

AITA said that they were concentrating on quality and not quantity, but the decision has not gone down well with the players involved in it. Bhupathi-Bopanna who wanted to be paired together wrote a statement saying “that the decision will deny two highly accomplished players of the privilege and opportunity to represent the country at the Olympics. This is a sad day for Indian tennis from all perspectives.”

Bhupahi then said that Paes is a backstabber and he won’t team up with him. To this AITA announced that if Bhupathi refuses to team up with Paes, they will have no option other than dropping him and picking Rohan Bopanna. But Bhupathi spat back saying that if he won’t go to the Olympics neither will Bopanna.

Yes, if you are a tennis fan you will find it very hard to believe, not to forget that all these statements are being made with Olympics being so close. But one thing that these great professionals are forgetting is by doing what they are doing, they are letting the entire nation down.

Leander Paes won a bronze medal for India in the Atlanta Olympics and we have been adoring him since then, so shouldn’t that be a good enough reason for the players to forget their personal grudges. Recently we celebrated Bhupathi and Sania Mirza’s success in the French Open, but that was their individual feat as they were not representing their country. They were representing themselves, but still we cheered for them, prayed for them and celebrated with them.
Don’t they owe us anything? It is Olympics and it is high time that India makes a mark in the biggest sporting event, but for that we need our best players to be at their best and not at loggerheads.

Creating such a fuss might have an influence on other sportsperson as well. Are the Indian tennis players ready for taking such a big blame?
