Sports and politics: Sportsperson who joined the political bandwagon

With the Little Master Sachin Tendulkar joining the political bandwagon as a member to the Upper House, he became the fourth Indian cricket player to have embraced politics. Well it is not only cricketers but sportsperson from other disciplines have also made it to the politics.
While some have contested the elections and made their way to the top few of them have been nominated by respective parties to make to honour their achievements in the field of sports.

While every sportsperson who have made it to the politics Sachin by all means is the most prominent of this elite class.

Here are some of the athletes who have made into the World of politics.

Sachin Tendulkar: He is the only active sportspersons who have made it to the Politics. He has been nominated by the congress party to an MP of Rajya Sabha and his nomination was approved by the President of India Pratibha Patil. Sachin’s nomination to Rajya Sabha did raise quite a few eyebrows as well and many think that it might affect his game. But then the batting maestro has made it quite evident that he would not compromise his cricket for politics. So the way he balances both the roles would be a treat to watch.

Dilip Tirkey: On March 21, 2012, he was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha as one of the three BJD candidates to the Upper House of Indian Parliament. Former captain and three times Olympian Tirkey used to play as a full back for Indian National Hockey team and has won many laurels for the country. With 412 international appearances he is the most capped player for India till date.

Navjot Singh Sidhu: Navjot Singh Sidhu after his cricketing career and TV commentary thought of joining politics and he contested election in 2004 from the Amritsar constituency. He won but had to resign due to a homicide charges leveled against him. After getting the necessary clearance from the jurisdiction, he contested again in 2009 general elections from the same seat and won it.

Kirti Azad: Kirti Azad’s connection with politics is very deeply rooted. His father Bhagwat Jha Azad was a former chief minister of Bihar and so he followed the suit. After serving as an MLA for BJP fro Delhi Gole Market constituency Delhi, he was elected to Parliament from Darbhanga district of Bihar.

Mohd Azharuddin: One of the most prolific captains of Indian Cricket Team he has started his political career in 2009. He contested the elections for Indian general election, 2009 from Moradabad in western Uttar Pradesh. He won the elections as a candidate of Indian National Congress party by defeating his nearest BJP rival Kunvar Sarvesh Kumar Singh with a margin of more than 50,000 votes.

Aslam Sher Khan: He is a former Indian hockey player and his playing position was of full back. He was considered as one of the world's best defenders erstwhile and an Olympian.
Khan had a very illustrious political career and started his political in the 8th Lok Sabha in 1984 as an Indian National Congress from Betul constituency in Madhya Pradesh. He contested from Betul constituency again in 1989, but he lost. He was re-elected to the 10th Lok Sabha from the same constituency in 1991 but again lost in 1996. In 2004, he contested from Bhopal Lok Sabha constituency as a Nationalist Congress Party candidate but lost again. In 2009, he contested from Sagar Lok Sabha constituency as a Congress candidate but could not win. Recently he has started a party of his own called the Madhya Pradesh Congress Jan Sangharsh Samiti to dislodge the ruling BJP party.

Pargat Singh: Pargat Singh is a former Indian Hockey captain and two times Olympians. He played as a full back was considered as one of the world's best defenders erstwhile. He captained Indian men's hockey team at 1992 Barcelona Olympics and 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He also has joined the political bandwagon and has been elected as an MLA from Jalandhar Cant Constituency of Punjab from ShiromanI Akali Dal.
