Yeoju, Gyeonggi-do, Korea: This week 120 professionals from the Asian Tour and Korean Golf Tour will be vying for top honours at the US$750,000 CJ Invitational Hosted by KJ Choi which tees off on Thursday.
While much of the attention will be on their performances at the immaculate Haesley Nine Bridges Golf Club, players from the Asian Tour are finding time away from the golf course to keep themselves entertained.
With the phenomenal success of Gangnam Style, a video by Korean rap artist Park Jae-sang or Psy, taking the world by storm, American Berry Henson, a one-time winner on the Asian Tour, is taking a leaf out of Psy’s books by attempting to produce his own video together with his peers from the Tour.
“There’re some good spots out here in Korea. That’s where the main video came from and so we’re trying to get a couple of stuff in over the next few days,” said Henson, who is among the players from over 30 different countries that give the Asian Tour its diverse and international appeal.
The original Gangnam Style video has been viewed over million times on YouTube and spawned a host of parodies that have sent chuckles even among the most deadpan faces.
Psy is seen dancing his way through the video in an eccentric horse-riding move all the while accompanied by beautiful models.
Beautiful models they may not be, but it’s just a fun way of mimicking those signature scenes for Thailand’s Panuphol Pittayarat.
“It’s a really funny music video which keeps people entertained. It’s so good and I like it. I surf YouTube all day as I like to listen to music and watch videos. So it’s nice to be involved in something like that with my friends,” said Panuphol who is nicknamed ‘Coconut’ by his parents.
It may be early days for Henson and his friends before the video is completed but their dancing act has definitely given them their personalities a different dimension.
“At the end of the day, we just want to tell people that we are more than just some golf professionals spending the day hitting balls on the golf course. It’s all in the name of fun and these are some of the things that we enjoy doing during our free time on Tour,” said Henson.
