Taipei: The second round of the Yeangder Tournament Players Championship (TPC) has been abandoned due to inclement weather on Friday.
Philippines’ Angelo Que continues to hold the clubhouse lead with his first round seven-under-par 65. The three-time Asian Tour winner could not tee off as thunderstorms had initially forced play to be suspended at 9.33am.
As the heavy rains continued to belt down at the Linkou International Golf and Country Club, tournaments officials were left with no choice but to call off play for the second round at 3pm, local time.
Only players from the morning session managed to tee off while the rest from the afternoon session will have to return on Saturday morning to resume their round which is scheduled to start at 8am.
American Jason Knutzon was even-par through nine holes and he took a share of second place alongside India Gangajeet Bhullar, who like Que, did not play today.
The Yeangder TPC will be celebrating its third edition this week and the full-field Asian Tour event has raised its profile further following a significant increase in its total prize fund to a record US$500,000 this year.
Chinese Taipei’s veteran Lu Wen-teh, a five-time Asian Tour winner provided the local cheers before the storms hit when he recorded the event’s second hole-in-one on the par-three 11th. Knutzon holds the honour as the first with his ace on the fifth hole on the opening day.
“This is my fourth hole-in-one since I turned professional and it came with my biggest prize to date. I’m happy and hopefully I can continue my charge when we return tomorrow,” said Lu who pocketed US$10,000 courtesy of his ace.
Huang Tao also made one of the early moves when he got to three-under after six holes to take a share of sixth place.
Huang opened strongly with an eagle-three on the first hole and followed that up with a birdie on the third hole before play was abandoned.
“The winds started to blow very strongly from the fourth hole and it was a challenge to play under such conditions. Hopefully, the weather will be kind to us tomorrow,” said Huang, who had opened with a 72.
