Chikka meets Baisoya in Eastern India Matchplay final

Kolkata: Delhi’s Honey Baisoya ensured it wouldn’t be an all-Bangalore final as he beat Khalin Joshi in an exciting semi-final clash at the Goodricke Eastern India Matchplay Golf championships at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club on Saturday.

 

Baisoya, who has had a decent season, beat Joshi 2&1 and will take on the National champion, Seenappa Chikkrangappa in the final. Chikka beat Angad Cheema 3&1 in the other semi-final. Both semi-finals last 17 holes each.

Honey and Khalin played a high quality match with nine birdies in all. Honey had five and just one bogey, and Khalin had four birdies and one double bogey. In a see-saw match, Honey was two-up after three but Joshi fought back to even after eight and then he was two-up at 11th. Honey found a second wind and on 14th he won a hole with a bogey as Khalin double bogeyed at which point the two were once again even.

Honey won the 15th with a birdie and then after both parred the 16th, Honey again birdied the 17th to finish the match 2&1.

Chikka went ahead on the third hole and a birdie on the sixth gave him a two hole advantage. On the very next hole, Angad bogeyed and Chikka won again with a par to go three up.

Angad won his first hole of the match on the 11th when Chikka bogeyed and the former parred. Immediately on the next hole Chikka again took his lead to three with his second birdie of the day. Angad did bring back the lead to two on 16th with two holes to go as Chikka bogeyed. But on the 17th Chikka won with a bogey as Angad double bogeyed to lose the match.

The final will be a 36-hole affair with Chikka and Baisoya clashing for the first segment of the final in the morning at 7.30 am and will then continue the battle in the second half with 18 more holes.
