Albatross Golf: Double delight for Manu

Gurgaon: Promising Manu Gandas was among the Indian winners as the hosts and Thailand shared three titles on the final day of the 3rd Albatross International Junior Golf Championship India, at the ITC Classic Golf Resort on Friday.

Manu won category ‘A’ by two shots after closing with a classy four-under 68. And his joy was doubled when he combined with Prakhar Asawa to help India to the boys’ team title (category ‘A’ and ‘B’).

The other home winners were Amrita Anand in category ‘C’, Aadil Bedi in category ‘D’, and Shubham in category ‘E’. Amrita ended 54 holes in a tie with Thailand’s Jaravee Boonchant, but did well to hold her nerve in a play-off. The ever-consistent Bedi won his category by an emphatic seven shots, while Shubham finished 12 clear of his nearest challenger.

Not surprisingly, the lowest combined scores of the three-day tournament came from the precocious Thais, Sarit Suwannarut (category ‘B’) and Puwit Anupansuebsai (category ‘C’). Sarit failed to break par for the first time in the week but his seven-under 209 was still 13 shots too good for everyone else. The remarkable Puwit, meanwhile, equalled his 2009 winning mark of 24 shots.

The other winners were Japan’s Moyu Sasaki (category ‘A’ girls), Wu Sha of China (category ‘B’ girls), and Thailand’s Onkanok Soisuwan (category ‘D’ girls). Moyu tees it up on the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Tour in the US.

The 3rd Albatross International Junior Golf Championship India was co-sanctioned by the Albatross Junior Tour and the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy (USA), and for the first time carried R&A World Amateur Golf Ranking points.
