Kandy: The Indian girls, Gurbani Singh and Gauri Monga were lying second at the end of the first round at the Sri Lankan Amateur championships. The Indians were trailing the leaders, Malaysia by four shots after the first day.
Playing at the par-73 Victoria Golf and Country Resort, Gurbani carded the day’s second best of 74, but Gauri had problems on the putting green and ended with an 80.
Gurbani, who turned 16 a day earlier, had 12 regulations and was good on the putting green, though she faltered on her chipping. She shot 74 after playing the front nine in level par and was one over for the back nine.
National champion Gauri, playing very few events this year, was done in by a quadruple bogey and she had birdies, four bogeys.
The boys’ team begins their competition a day later. The Indian duo is S Chikkrangappa and Gagan Verma.
