MP Sachin Tendulkar chalks plan to develop sports in India

Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar has devised an elaborate sports promotion plan for college students and wants to share it with the government.

According to Deccan Herald, in a letter to Human Resources Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal, Tendulkar has expressed his desire to meet him and give a presentation of his plan, sources in the ministry told Deccan Herald.

Tendulkar, who was recently nominated member of the Rajya Sabha, is learnt to have made several suggestions in his letter to the HRD minister for promoting sport in higher educational institutions across the country.

However, officials are tight-lipped over what he has suggested in his letter to the minister. They said: “He wants to visit the ministry personally and give a presentation.”

Sibal, who recently announced launching of an inter-university cricket league and hockey league at the national level to encourage talented sportspersons in higher educational institutions in coordination with the Association of Indian Universities and a news channel, is keen on giving a hearing to Tendulkar, sources said. The meeting may be held anytime this month.

Meanwhile The Times of India writes that in the presentation, Tendulkar essentially made four main points - how to tap into the grassroots level and nurture young talent, how to promote sports at university and college levels and make it more competitive, how to revamp infrastructure and improve the structure of excellence and how physical activities should be compulsory for every Indian.

Tendulkar has taken inspiration from India's strong showing in the 2012 London Olympics - and explained how the country's best medal tally could be used as a great opportunity to further develop India as a sporting nation.

Four-Point Agenda:

1. Tap into grassroots and nurture young talent

2. Promote sports at university and college levels

3. Revamp sporting infrastructure

4. Make physical activity part of school curriculum
