German Bundesliga: Dortmund record narrow victory in German Cup

Berlin:German Bundesliga champion Borussia Dortmund beat second division team Greuther Fuehrth 1-0 thanks to midfielder Ilkay Guendogan's late goal.

A first division front-runner, Dortmund dominated the match against a determined Fuehrth. But the guests could not convert golden chances that came their way Tuesday night.

As the match progressed, Fuerth played good offensive football, Xinhua reported. After 90 goalless minutes, the match went into overtime.

With seconds to go for a penalty shootout, youngster Guendogan shocked the hosts with a thunderous shot from inside the penalty area to seal the deal for Dortmund.

The shot rattled the near post to hit goalie Jasmin Fejzic, who was fielded a minute earlier to support his side in the penalty shootout, and deflected into his own goal.

"We must now console the team. This defeat cannot be more bitter," Greuther Fuerth coach Michael Bueskens said.

"It is a dream. We again wasted many chances still we worked hard. We have earned the final. Respect for Fuerths performance," Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said. (IANS)
