Subroto Cup International Football Tournament: Goal-gluts aplenty in U-17 girls matches

NCC SUBROTO 2New Delhi: Government MLB Girls High School from Chhindwara (MP) made amends for yesterday’s loss of face with a thumping 19-0 victory over Alchemy School from Surat (Gujarata) in the Junior Girls (under-17) league match of the 57th Subroto Cup International Football Tournament at the Dr.Ambedkar Stadium here on Monday.

On the opening day of the girls’ affairs, the MP school girls lost their first match very badly and putting the loss behind, their girls played a brilliant start-to-finish match when AnamKumari led the team’s charge with five goals. As if this was not enough, AartiKumari and AyushiKumari struck four times each with four other of their teammates joining the party.

The Alchemy school girls did not have a clue to stop their rivals from advancing into the penalty box and scoring at will. If their defense was pores, their attack line, too, was pathetic on the day as they simply gathered in their half to thwart MP girls. But it was not to be.

In another evening match at NWC grounds, the Government Mizo High School from Aizwal continued their winning ways as they beat The Air Force School (Subroto Park) girls 17-0. Vanlalnawaii, their prolific striker, doing the star turn for her team with 11 goals, interspersed with a hat-trick. Lalruatefli (4) and H. Paitu (2) added to the team’s tally.

However, the morning matches at Dr. AmbedkarStadium, Kerala’s SAM GMR Sports School from

Thiruvananthapuram scored a facile 1-0 win over St Xavier’s High School from Goa with Simna struck in the 44th minute. In contrast, the latter match at the same venue saw ChanambamThambou Higher Secondary School from Manipur handing out a 7-1 verdict against YUWA India from Ranchi (Jharkhand).

The Manipur girls surged past their rival in the very first minute when Kritina Devi struck, making most of a defense lapse. This opened the floodgates for the team as Daya Devi scored five times and  completed a hat-trick with the last three-goal sequence in the 32nd, 55th minutes and then in the injury time. In between Babysana Devi struck in the 21st minute.

The first set of group matches in the U-17 girls’ affairs will end on September 29 with the two quarterfinals slated for September 30. The second set of quarterfinals will be played on October 5 with semifinals on October 8. The girls’ final will be played on October 10
