Abu Dhabi: “Oman played an unbelievable brand of cricket. Knowing their coach, I was sure they would come up with something. It was amazing and I really enjoyed watching them bat,” India captain Suryakumar Yadav admitted with a smile after his side sealed a hard-fought 21-run victory over Oman in their final Asia Cup 2025 group-stage clash on Friday.
India, who entered the contest with two wins, made it three out of three to book their place in the Super 4s. But the path was far from straightforward as ICC associate member Oman pushed the tournament favourites deep into the contest with a gritty batting display.
Batting first, India posted 188 for eight, thanks to Sanju Samson’s composed 56 off 45 balls and Abhishek Sharma’s blistering 15-ball 38 that set the early tempo. The Oman bowlers, however, refused to be overawed, swinging the new ball effectively and keeping the Indian middle order on its toes.
Oman’s reply was anchored by veteran Aamir Kaleem, who struck a fighting 64 from 46 deliveries. He shared a 56-run stand with skipper Jatinder Singh (32 off 33) before stitching a 93-run partnership with Hammad Mirza, who blazed his way to a 33-ball 51. Their effort kept the contest alive until the final overs, but chasing 189 proved just a step too far as they closed at 167 for four in 20 overs.
For India, the night also carried historical significance. Left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh claimed his 100th wicket in T20 internationals, dismissing Vinayak Shukla in the final over to become the first Indian bowler to reach the milestone.
Sanju Samson, adjudged Player of the Match, lauded Oman’s spirited effort: “It was hot and humid out there. Really good to spend some time in the middle and contribute. They bowled really well, especially in the powerplay. You take a couple of balls to get your eye in, that’s the only way in this format. Credit to them for the way they bowled and batted.”
Oman skipper Jatinder Singh could only brim with pride despite the loss: “The way the boys came up with their plans and executed them was commendable. We lack experience and exposure, but this game was a blessing in disguise. The boys have shown great character against the world number one side. With the World Cup qualifiers in Oman coming up, this was the perfect preparation.”
India march into the Super 4s unbeaten, but Oman leave with their heads held high, having announced themselves on the continental stage with character, composure and conviction.
