From 1987 World Cup final to 3rd ODI vs India in 2007: ODI matches played by England at Eden Gardens

India vs england 3rd ODIEngland finally won one international match at the Eden gardens in Kolkata. After four One-day Internationals matches, the visitors beat the hosts in a nail-biting finish by five runs. This was also their first win on this tour to India.

From 1987 World Cup final to the last of the ODI series on January 22, 2017.  Here is the list of One-day international matches played by England at this venue:

India vs England, 3rd ODI: Good to be back at Eden and win a game, says Ben Stokes

1.    India Vs England in 2002: The first of the six-match ODI series, India won the toss and opted to bat first. India posted a decent total of 281 in 50 overs. Dinesh Mongia’s 76, Sourav Ganguly’s 42 and Sachin Tendulkar’s 36 helped India reach a defendable score. In reply, Marcus Edward Trescothick was the only highlight of the England innings. His superb knock of 121 went in vain as Indian bowlers chipped in with regular wickets. The hosts bowled out England for 259 in 44 overs. India won the match by 22 runs. For his superb innings of 121, Marcus Edward Trescothick was the man-of-the-match.

2.    Australia Vs England 1987 World Cup Final: In the all-important final, Australia batted and scored 253 for 5 in 50 overs. David Boon and Dean Jones were the top scorers for the Aussies. England fell just seven runs short. The key wickets of Bill Athey, Allan Lamb and Mike Gatting in quick successions allowed Australia to win the final by seven runs. Australia won the 1987/88 World Cup. David Boon was named the man-of-the-match in the final.  

3.    India Vs England in 2011: England won the toss and chose to ball first. After a good opening start of 80 runs. India lost the momentum due to three quick wickets on the same score. Few low score partnerships in middle and lower order helped India to be stable and to reach a safer score. MS Dhoni was unbeaten till the end. His 75 not out was the main reason behind India score of 271 runs from 50 overs. In reply, England got off to a flying start. The opening pair of Craig Kieswetter and Alastair Nathan Cook added 129 runs in just 20.2 overs. It was proving very difficult for India to break this partnership. Ravindra Jadeja was the man for India to break this opening stand. Jadeja took the key wicket of Craig Kieswetter for 63. And then Varon Aron bowled the England skipper Cook for 60. Thereafter, India ran through their middle order. England batsmen couldn’t hang around as Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin wrapped up the England innings for just 176 runs. India won the match and series 5-0. MS Dhoni was named the man-of-the-match.

4.    India Vs England in 2017: After losing a close match against India in the 2nd ODI at Cuttack. England wanted a consolation win at the Eden Gardens. England were sent in to bat first by the hosts. Jason Roy scored his 3 consecutive 50 in this series. His 65 runs was the top score for England. England was on the back foot when they lost Moen Ali, but Ben Stokes heroics helped the visitors to score 321 in 50 overs. India fell 5 runs short mainly because of Kedar Jhadav’s effort of 90 runs and Hardik Pandya’s 56. The youngster showed his all round skills. He completed his maiden 50.
