Kapil Dev, Srinath, Zaheer, Ishant: Indian pace bowlers in 200-wicket club in Tests

ishant sharma TestThough India have produced legendary spinners who have been match winners on their day, there have been few Indian fast bowlers who have been a treat to watch when on song. All rounder and legendary former Indian Captain Kapil Dev, Javagal Srinath, Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma are some of the few who have won many matches for India and feature in the 200-wicket club.

1. Kapil Dev: India is still looking for a fast bowling all rounder since his retirement from international cricket. He picked up his 200th wicket against West Indies at Port of Spain. He is the first International player and the only Indian player to score more than 5,000 runs and pick up more than 400 wickets in the history of the game.

2. Javagal Srinath: The engineer turned cricketer was the spearhead of Indian fast bowling attack for quite sometime. His 200th wicket came against the South Africans in Bloemfontein. In 67 matches, Srinath picked up 236 wickets with an average of 30.49. He was also handy with the bat lower down the order; he has 1009 runs to his name with four fifties.

3. Zaheer Khan: The lethal and most productive bowler after Kapil Dev, he was the leading wicket taker for India in all World Cup matches that he played. Zaheer played 92 matches and picked up 311 wickets with an average of 32.94. While his best score of 75 came against Bangladesh. He shared 133 runs partnership for the 10th wicket with Sachin Tendulkar. That’s the record partnership, the second highest overall. 

4. Ishant Sharma: He was discovered in the tour of Australia in 2007-08. There he kept picking Ricky Pointing for many times in that Test series. Ishant Sharma got his 200th wicket against Sri Lanka at Colombo. Ishant is the 4th fast/pace Indian bowler to be in this club. He had been spearheading the pace bowling attack in the Indian team but frequent injuries has kept him out. His performance in Lords in the year 2014 was the best overall. He picked up 7 Wickets and gave India a famous victory after 28 years. The 28 year old pacer has played 73 Test matches so far and picked up 212 wickets at the average of 36.47.
