Paragua gets hold of Barbosa & Gomez at top

New Delhi: Filipino Grandmaster Mark Paragua defeated Indian International Master Debashis Das in the ninth round to join countrymen Oliver Barbosa and Gomez John Paul to share the lead with seven and half points in the ongoing 10th Parsvnath International Grandmasters Chess Tournament at Ludlow Castle Sports Complex on Saturday.


Mark ParaguaPlaying with white pieces in Semi-Slav variation, Paragua showed sheer attacking game with three continues piece sacrifices in the middle of game to garner full point against his Indian rival in 36 moves. 

Kolkata based Diptayan Ghosh achieved his first International Master norm after signing the peace with World Under-12 Gold medalist Karthikeyan Murali in the ninth round while Zeng Chongsheng of China lost his ninth round encounter against Indian International Master Lalith Babu but secured his International Master norm during the process.

In other important ninth round matches, overnight joint leaders Oliver Barbosa and Gomez John Paul settled for half point against Russian Grandmaster Evgeny Gleizerov and International Master Shyam Nikil respectively to maintain their pole position in the point table.  In a major upset in the ninth round, playing with black pieces in Najdorf variation of Sicilian defence game, Delhi youngster Hemant Sharma shocked Uzbek Grandmaster Marat Dzhumaev .

Eleven players including International Master Rathnkaran K, who held higher seeded Grandmaster Andrei Deviatkin of Russia in the ninth round, are closely following the three leaders with a drift of half point.
