Junior Chess: Arushi Kotwal assured title

New Delhi: With one round remaining, Jammu & Kashmir girl Arushi Kotwal assured the title in the Under-7 Girls category  of the ongoing Asian School Chess Championship here at Indira Gandhi Stadium on Wednesday. In the penultimate round, Arushi defeated Divya Deshmukh to take her tally to eight points from as many matches and have a clear two point lead over her nearest rivals. In the final round tomorrow, Arushi is paired against Vrunda Naik and the outcome of result will not affect her title.


Meanwhile in the Under-15 Open section, top seed Girish Koushik signed the peace treaty with second seed Rishi Sardana and have the company of Anish Gandhi at top of point table. Anish beat Dhulipala Bala Chandra Prasad in the eighth round.  In the girls section of this age category, second seed Delhi girl Madhurima Shekhar settled for half point against Arunima Goyal in the eighth round and have half point lead over top seed Nandhidhaa P V.

In the Under-13 Open section, top seed Diptayan Ghosh maintained his perfect run in the championship and have full point lead over his nearest rival national junior champion Aravindh Chithambaram.  A draw in the final round against third seed Sidhant Mohapatra will pave the path for his title. In the Under-7 Open category, Abdusattorov Nodirbek of Uzbekistan is leading with seven and half points and apart from this category, Indian players are dominating the proceedings in all other categories.

The ninth and final round of the championship will be played on Thursday and closing ceremony scheduled at 1600 hrs.
